Something Strange is Happening in Bufkin County
Hitch saw his dog Salem’s golden frame collapsed and quivering on the ground, and he knew something was wrong. She’d been fine the day before, swimming in the creek just as careless as a dog swimming in a creek should be, but Salem was now moaning, fussing and generally acting as if a cat had just been elected governor.
Hitch knelt down in front of his dog and felt her fur, which was a little mangy. He also noticed how swollen Salem’s belly was. The ol' girl's giving birth! He thought. And her unborn offspring's roughly the size and shape of a gigantic egg!

What Will Happen When it Hatches?
If you think this is the end of the tale, then you don’t know Bufkin County. Come along with young Hitch, Constable Buford Bumford and Jethro as they discover that their dog Salem is going to launch something that will turn their lives upside down, and change the world in ways that no one could ever imagine.

This is a fantasy book that deals with how monsters come to be, as the descriptions state. But the way it is written is almost enchanting, as you do not expect anyone to talk like this, especially those from the middle of nowhere! But perhaps this is a different time on Earth? Maybe not the here and now or even far in the future (or even waaaaay back then) but maybe a middle ground.

But what kept me going, especially, was the puns (Demi Gogg as a name, comes to mind) and those slay me, which is why I loved the Xanth novels.
Not that this is in that category, but it reminds me of it, somewhat.

A vaguely unsettling moment when Hitch realizes how old he is compared to his mother, wow (and no mention of how old Jethro is...), was the only thing I did not like about this book, other than the fact that it has no Freaking Ending!
Why do novelists do this, drag you in and then make you get another? Only, there is no other book for this, and that is a darned shame.

Maybe because that it has no others is this books' monster, but perhaps I over think things.

The Dog That Laid Eggs Every Monster Comes From Somewhere edition by Jonathan Maas Patty Smith Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

It took a little while to get into the book because He had to lay down the groundwork for the story. Once you get through that it was interesting.
Glad I got this when it was free. Only got a few pages in. The attempts at hillbilly humor muxed with pop culture references seem forced and stale.
Not an easy read but great if you slow down to catch all the nuances, wording, and good natured deviltry in this comical book. Tongue in cheek humor infuses the story of young Hitch, his dog Salem and her egg-hatched flying creation. A clever play on words.
The last time I laughed out loud while reading a book was about 40 years ago, but I sure laughed out loud at this one! Thank you, Jonathan Maas, for writing some very funny stuff before getting so serious about the battle between good and evil. I certainly enjoyed the ride.
This is just a wonderful conglomeration of, gosh, everything! There's weirdness here - always a plus for me. Mythology, dreams, romance, lost love, danger, true goodness, loyalty, coming of age and more, all wrapped up in a you-had-me-at-a-dog-that-lays-eggs to a battle for good and evil in a town that seems to be small and insignificant, but which is really a micro version of our society. It believes it is a _very_ important and special place. And it is.
History tidbits to romance to trickledown economics to vocabulary and more....
I saw good vs evil books advertised for Diwali and it would fit that perfectly as well as for Halloween and general monster adoration. It is about people and life in general with relevance to current events. I'm glad I didn't let the title scare me off!
This book was probably meant to be a parody on something-the society, the academic world, nonsense literature, fantasy epics, stories of the hick west, whatever. Somehow, it hasn't made up its mind and as a result it ended being a parody on itself, albeiti not a very good one. The book is inundated with juvenile humor, with pearls like DuMFAK Three-County-District, or a horse named Bucephala being representative examples of this genre. I waded through approximately a third of the masterpiece and then gave up. Mind you, it isn't offensive, just very silly. The author would have done himself and us a favor by limiting it to a short story. That, strange as it seems, might have been even slightly amusing.
